The Understory

Thirty species of plants that like or tolerate shade have been planted in this area. A few are also planted in other locations; for instance, bladdernut and spice bush like wet shade, and sheep laurel is planted in the bog garden.

Additional information about these plants including a map showing where they are growing is located in the mailbox.

This is the only area where we do significant doctoring of soil chemistry, liming some plants and adding sulfur for others. The acid loving plants are generally grouped beyond the mailbox close to the trail.
